You meet new people every day—it’s just part of life. But what happens when you meet someone, your paths collide, and you form a meaningful relationship? It can lead to an inspirational story.
When Ryan Thibodeaux and I met while working for the Julian Robertson “Tiger Seed,” Maple Leaf Partners, we knew our paths were colliding for a reason. In 2012, that reason became clear: the founding of Goodwood Capital Management.
Authentic business relationships are incredibly important to our long short equity team, so we wanted to create a new “Meet the Team” blog series in which you can get to know us a little better. Worst case scenario? You “meet” an interesting new person. Best case scenario? Your path collides with ours and we create a genuine business connection.
The first member of the Goodwood Capital Management team to be featured is: Ryan Thibodeaux.
Hailing from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Ryan’s Southern roots show in his love of “new” country music. Through the years his favorite musicians and singers have been Garth Brooks, Rascal Flatts, and Florida Georgia Line. Also, if he had to choose a second career, he’d jump at the chance to be a country music producer.
“I’ve kinda got a sensational ear for new artists—just sayin’,” he said jokingly.
However, even though he’s a lotta bit country, he’s still a little bit rock 'n roll, too. His first concert was Def Leppard and he’s got 6,000 songs on his iPhone from all genres; he’s never played in a band, but he wishes he had! Needless to say, if you need a music recommendation, hit up Ryan—he will be your personal DJ.
In addition to his love of music, Ryan has always had that entrepreneurial spirit—he first tested the waters by starting a web design company, Internet Innovations, with his college roommate. They eventually sold it at the height of the tech boom in 2000—the year Ryan graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Louisiana State University.
From there, Ryan worked for Enron Corp and Morgan Stanley. However, his financial career really took off when he worked in Maple Leaf’s Baton Rouge headquarters from 2002 until 2011. Ryan was a Partner and Senior Equity Research Analyst at Maple Leaf and the firm eventually grew to over $2 billion in assets under management.
Beyond work, Ryan is a founding Board Member for the Emerge School for Autism, the first-ever tuition-free school for autistic children in Louisiana.
Ryan is married with 3 kids (1 girl, 2 boys) and resides in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

What inspires you:
My son, Cole. He was diagnosed with Autism when he was 2 years old. As a 10 year old, he has already overcome tremendous challenges in his life—yet, he is one of the happiest kids I know and has a smile on his face every day. He has taught me a lot about patience and perseverance, and has made me a better person. He is my proudest achievement, and my favorite superhero.
Growing up my dad, who is a plumber, always used this one-liner; Ironically, it means more to me today than it did back then: “The main thing is, don’t get excited.”
